Acrylic paint on cardboard

18×20"

Mothers’ Day

“Peinture l’Essence” is a term for a quick-drying drained oil painting approach by Edgas Degas, who preferred that method for quick compositional studies. My piece is done with acrylic paint and is a study of the French painter and extraordinary illustrator Henri de Toulouse Lautrec (1864-1901). I left the unfinished cardboard-as he painted on unprepared cardboard or paper-only to enhance the composition and invoke the expressive feeling of LauTrec’s paintings. Taking risks with colors, designs and materials lend to the radical movement we know as Impressionism. The fresh smell of peonies remind me of love on Mothers’ Day.
